Anthony’s got the gunslinger’s existential wanderlust, while Violet has the domestic moments of dreamlike contemplation. It’s a contrast that somehow works together perfectly. Musically, it’s what good music should be: simultaneously raw and ambitious, rooted and cosmic, heavy and bright. It’s not country, not “acoustic,” not singer-songwriter, not pop. It’s all of that and none of it at the same time. It’s post-genre music that comes from writers who clearly have tastes all over the map. What’s impressive is how cohesive and singular it all sounds.
