Bio:
Influenced by the music of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Langston Hughes' Black Nativity from an early age, this Boston-area native began playing the guitar at age seven, writing songs by age eleven. Having grown up singing his whole life, but being moved by the soulful sounds of Motown, he fell in love with gospel music in high school. Listening to gospel music, he taught himself to play the piano and began composing solo and choral pieces on the piano around this time. While enrolled at Tufts University, Alexi became involved in the Boston gospel music scene, most notably with the Kuumba Singers of Harvard College. He gained experience performing, directing, composing, and arranging pieces in the gospel, spiritual, and neo-spiritual genres. He is currently a singer/songwriter, playing solo gigs in and around the Boston area, and is the Assistant Director of the Boston College choir, Voices of Imani. Through these experiences, he has had the privilege of performing for musical artists such as Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma, and Joshua Redman; actors like Dan Aykroyd, Selma Hayek, and Laurence Fishburne; as well as politicians and activists including Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Cornel West, John Kerry, the late senator Ted Kennedy, and current vice president, Joe Biden. His music ranges from acoustic soul and RnB to soft ballads, and covers everything from life struggles as in "Broken People", to issues of love as in "Better Man"; from spiritual struggles as in "Be Still", to his social justice re-make of the old Civil Rights song, "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round". Whether he's singing solo or with the audience, he hopes his music can bring people together and leave at least one audience member enlightened, empowered, and changed.
