Bio:
The Coastals’ start came when Drew Champion and Will Dobud, both college mates, began playing in a small, unfinished basement just outside the nation’s capital. When preparing to hit the studio to record their debut full length, the band rehearsed with punk bassist Andre Pagliarini from Southern California’s Blame the Noise. As the band grew and their sound became solid, The Coastals entered the studio. Being true to the Washington DC form, The Coastals recorded with Don Zientara, the celebrated engineer most known for his work with the early Dischord Records bands (Fugazi, Minor Threat, Q and Not U). Working night shifts with Don into the early hours, the boys were able to pump out a 12 song full length. The pumping drums with vintage guitar sound drenched the record with the classic punk sound while Drew’s vocal melodies took lyrics driven by the youthful angst that made those records we love into a sound compatible with today’s music. Andre’s bass work sticks out through the record giving each listener that remembrance of the old Clash records and giving each song it’s special groove. On January 1, 2011, The Coastals released their first tease of the record with their single/EP the Stand Up EP. Featuring four solid tracks from the full length, the EP captures the essence of the full length and has been available for digital purchase since the New Year. During the time leading up to their release, they have been appearing in Washington’s premier music venues, bars, and nightclubs becoming an essential act in the area as well as making appearances in the underground music press scene. Abiding to the convention of being an up and coming DC band, The Coastals have released their full length on their on accord with distribution support from Dischord Records. As for the future, Andre has released his own project, The Boardroom Heroes, but The Coastals will hit the studio this Spring to continue their rise as not only a local success act but into a national group.
