Red Letter F is a four piece rock band formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2006. The band consists of Mauricio Paez (vocals, guitar), John J (bass guitar, vocals), Kirk Hein (guitar, vocals)and Brad Yablonsky (drums, vocals). Red Letter F’s sound is a mixture of hard melodic riff oriented rock and anthem like choruses. The band focuses on its influence of hard classic rock, punk and blues to mold their raw minimalistic, straight forward, no frills DIY sound. In early 2006 Mauricio and John found each other through an online musician referral site. This became the initial incarnation of what was to be Red Letter F. The two began rehearsing and writing accompanied solely by drum machine tracks downloaded onto an Ipod. The search was on for a drummer to complete the next step. Mauricio had a drummer friend hailing from New Jersey, Brad Yablonsky, who had recently left his current band Soma. Brad was heavily entrenched as a Jazz drummer in the Albuquerque Jazz scene. February of 2008 the three decided to jam one night and realized that the completely different musical backgrounds really came together in an amazing way. John was coming from his Hard Rock influences growing up in Cleveland with his band Snack n Cakes which charted a Billboard top 40 hit with “Crying’s Over”. Mauricio had made his way up with the Alternative Rock side of the 90’s with his band Dog the Cat in Houston. Everything was melding together perfectly but a second guitarist would be needed if Red Letter F was to be complete. After many attempts and even gigs with other guitarists, the band found Kirk Hein through a local musician ad. Right off the bat Mauricio and Kirk hit it off because Kirk also hailed from Houston and was deeply influenced by the Alternative/Indie sound of the 90’s. Kirk had recently left his band Packaged Habits behind and relocated to Albuquerque. Kirk came to audition for the band shortly after in March of 2009.
