Bio:
At 11, Barry was introduced to his first guitar: a red Rickenbacker knock-off played through a small 12-inch Kalamazoo amp. Living in Tulsa at the time, Barry studied under a local country artist. The first song he ever learned—Neil Young's "Heart of Gold." A few years later, the family moved to Gainesville, Florida where he decided to take a crack at the drums. His dad bought him his first kit from a starving University of Florida student. It was a late 1960s Ludwig 5-piece kit with a white pearl finish accompanied by some amazing Zildjian cymbals (the best part of the kit). In high school, he played snare in the marching band. The family moved again to Sarasota, Florida where Barry joined the choir in a local church and played drums for the youth band. He soon became the first drummer to ever play at his church's Sunday morning worship service (a big deal for a small, conservative church in the 70s). After high school, Barry moved to Amsterdam, Holland, and worked with an international Christian organization, Youth With A Mission, performing music and theater all over the world. There are few moments in life more satisfying to Barry than the ones when he can sing and play, especially if it means he can collaborate with other talented musicians. He has dabbled in almost every musical style: reggae, pop, rock, blues, gospel, jazz—even opera, and he loves it all. In his latest CD, Tenacious Grace, Barry brings a bluesy edge to the music. When he’s not working on music or as full-time music director at Covenant Life Church, he’s maybe watching a classic movie, or just passed out on the couch. Fortunately, his wife Kay wakes him up and tells him to get back to work! And every chance they get, he and Kay travel somewhere-- old Florida, old Italy--anywhere!
