Bio:
The fact that Sylpheed’s home country of Italy is a bit slow on the heavy metal uptake isn’t stopping the innovative six piece, female led powerhouse band from finding a way to set stereos on fire and rattle windows around the world with its heavily distorted guitars, booming drums, intense vocals (straightforward and growling), incendiary lyrics and, yes, even soaring violin textures. Exploring all the different aspects of the metal world—heavy, death, gothic, doom and thrash—Sylpheed was the only Italian metal band ever to play the Sweden Rock Festival (June 2010) and plans to conquer the rest of Europe and the U.S. . Sylpheed approaches music with no limitations. The band takes its name from Sylph (Sylphid), a mythological creature in the Western tradition. The term originates in Paracelsus, who describes sylphs as “invisible beings of the air, his elementals of air.” The first mainstream western discussion of sylphs comes with 18th Century poet Alexander Pope. In “Rape of the Lock,” Pope satirizes French Rosicrucian and alchemical writings when he invents a theory to explain the sylph. In a parody of heroic poetry and the “dark” and “mysterious” literature of pseudoscience, and in particular the sometimes esoterically Classical heroic poetry of the 18th century in England and France, Pope pretends to have a new alchemy, in which the sylph is the mystically, chemically condensed humors of peevish women. In Pope’s poem, women who are full of spleen and vanity turn into sylphs when they die because their spirits are too full of dark vapors to ascend to the skies. This particular myth perfectly describes the concept behind the band: an elegant sound that masks an evil attitude but also a certain “culture,” a poetic yet aggressive research that represents the band and its different metal approach—much like the gorgon Medusa that captures men with her seductive body only to petrify them with a serpentine, venomous attitude. Sylpheed merges dark and heavy riffs with acoustic, melancholy atmospheres and furious speed parts weaved with melodic sounds from the violin. Continuing the metaphor, the voice of Ilenia (like Medusa herself) hypnotizes the listener, only to strike back with growling brutal force and aggression. It’s something of a Yin Yang thing: the white always has its black heart and vice versa, just like the music of Sylpheed. “Metal is not only made of rage and ‘wild things,’” says Rust “Myths and poems can be hard and heavy just like a guitar chord. Sylpheed embodies the dualistic form of elegance and evilness and that was since the beginning! You know, there is always something good in us, but also there is a dark side that sometimes drives us to do bad things. It is important to recognize this dark side, how it is shaped and how to control it. Culture and knowledge are weapons that can be useful to understand ourselves and other people and music is our inspiring muse. Through Sylpheed we can communicate with people and (maybe) with ourselves. “The greatest thing in live performances is the communication with the people,” he adds. “When we can reach the audience with our music, it is an absolutely awesome experience. We love to see them moshing or listening with closed eyes. Fans are everything for us...music is communication and communication would be nothing without the listener.”
